Gluten free cafes in Bowral
A list of gluten free cafes in and around Bowral.
Last updated April 2024
The Southern Highlands is home to many cafes and restaurants, it’s a great spot to go for a sweet treat and a wander. Luckily for coeliacs and gluten intolerant people, Bowral has a few options for those with a sweet tooth. So far, I’ve only tried two cafes but I’m hoping to add more to this guide shortly.
Know of more I should include? I’d love to hear from you.
Lil Piggy, Mittagong
Everything at this cafe is certifiably delicious. I had to rein in this review because you’re going to think I own the place (I don’t).
Serving up your wildest dreams between 7am - 3pm, there is so much for a coeliac to love about Lil Piggy. Picture all the foods you thought you’d never eat again — pancakes, fried chicken, uncontaminated hot chips, battered fish — that’s their menu (among many other delicious items). I think my favourite GF find is when I discover a place that does the basics I miss, well; and that’s exactly what Lil Piggy does. I’ve had pancakes, burgers, quiche and cakes from here and every time it’s been phenomenal.
In terms of pricing, I found it to be very reasonable. My benchmark for ‘reasonable’ is typically: Do I feel like I’m being exploited for a dietary requirement I have no control over? When the answer is no, I call it a win. Burgers are around the $20-$25 mark which is what I’d expect to pay for a non GF meal. It’s also worth noting they’re huge and come with hot chips on the side. Most notably, the cake display was full of goods and each cost around $5. Again, that’s what I’d expect for a regular sweet treat and there’s something so great about not paying the gluten free tax.
A final note for the coeliacs - everything in this cafe is safe, there is no risk of cross contamination as the whole place is gluten free.
Franquette Creperie, Bowral
Not the most aesthetically pleasing meal but a culinary delight nonetheless.
This place came highly recommended to me from a few fellow coeliacs and it absolutely delivered. What a gem of a spot.
Gluten free crepes made on buckwheat flour make just about all of the menu safe to consume or at least modify. The wait staff are knowledgeable and educated about coeliac disease which makes asking questions and modifying meals seamless.
I ordered the tatin which was a sweet crepe with poached apples and butterscotch sauce. On the menu, it comes with a crumble but this couldn’t be done gluten free so I just asked them to omit it which was no problem. It was really enjoyable and made for a great brunch! You can make the meal as small or big as you want by upping the amount of crepes it’s served with. I opted for the single serve and it was $19 which I thought was reasonable.
I’m hoping to head back some time soon to review a savoury crepe next.
