Gluten free restaurants in Sydney
A list of the best gluten free restaurants in Sydney, including coeliac safety details.
Last updated June 2024
As a coeliac, I’m permanently in the pursuit of a dinner that is delicious, safe and doesn’t make me feel like I’m missing out. The hunt for a good gluten free meal isn’t always easy; I’ve found it can be time consuming, expensive and full of disappointments - especially when the gluten free tax is applied but the meal is sub-par (GF pizza bases should feel super attacked right about now).
When eating out, the brief is simple: tasty, safe, value for money. Each of the below have been tried and tested by myself and are certified to have understood the assignment.
Know of more I should include? I’d love to hear from you.
UchiLounge, Sydney CBD
This one needs to be on your radar. UchiLounge is a Japanese restaurant with a focus on organic, quality produce - and it shows. I’ve been here twice now and it’s quickly become a favourite. The menu is well sized and diverse; it’s big enough that you’ve got variety but small enough that you know it will be done well. You can enjoy anything from kara-age chicken to curries to ramen. Every item on the menu either is or can be made gluten free. From what I can tell, there is little room for gluten exposure for coeliacs who need to consider this, however, always check in with the staff for your own safety.
If you’re headed here, I can confidently recommend the; kara-age chicken, organic tender beef rib ramen (with rice noodles), and the grilled miso eggplant.
In terms of pricing, I originally thought it was a bit spendy when I ordered but then the serving sizes turned out to be massive and I thought it was a really reasonable cost for what we got. For reference, each dish cost around $20-$27 each.
For those interested, there are also plenty of vegetarian and vegan options that look just as tasty.
Yulli’s, Surry Hills, Sydney
Delicious. Affordable. Gluten free and coeliac safe. What’s not to love about Yulli’s?! I was beyond impressed with this restaurant; I didn’t know vegetables could taste so damn good. Originally, I had booked Yulli’s because they had a separate coeliac safe menu and I later realised it was also a vegan restaurant. I went in a group of 4 - none of us are vegan - yet all of us left happy, with stomachs full and we haven’t stopped raving about it.
First up, I ordered the roasted adobo cauliflower with butter bean cream and walnut crumbs. This dish was a perfect blend of spicy, sweet & sour flavours with a perfect crunch. The humble cauliflower got a full blown makeover with this dish.
Next up, I got the tom yum spaghetti with cavolo nero and lemongrass crumbs. Again, this dish blew me away. The GF spaghetti was cooked to perfection, the tom yum sauce was so flavourful and the cavolo nero with the lemongrass crumbs took it to a whole other level.
If Yulli’s isn’t on your list already, it absolutely should be.
Mr Wong, Sydney CBD
Mr Wong is renowned for having some of the freshest and tastiest Cantonese-style food in Sydney and the gluten free experience of this was no exception. Alongside a group of 10 other people, we ordered one of the banquet options. I was expecting to just have to skip a few dishes but this was not the case at all; I honestly think I ended up with more food than those around me who didn’t need a GF variation. If something couldn’t be made gluten free then they’d just bring out another dish that was safe for me. By the end of it, I was so full and giving food away. Every course was delicious, it’s genuinely difficult to pick a single favourite but here’s some of the standout items:
Scallops in a burnt butter sauce with rice noodles
Hiramasa kingfish
Queensland king prawns
Battered tofu with fried shallots and dried chillies
Raspberry and buttermilk parfait
Price wise, this is an expensive restaurant but there’s certainly value for money in it. We paid around $120 per person (drinks aren’t included in that cost, food only) but we got 10 courses in that and couldn’t fault any of the food.
It’s worth noting, I’m not sure if these items I listed above are on the regular menu or were custom made based on the banquet we chose to price match. Either way, you can know you will be well looked after here!
Flyish Fish, The Star, Pyrmont
Flying Fish is one of the fine dining restaurants located within The Star in Pyrmont, Sydney. While it’s not a 100% gluten free restaurant, the menu is coeliac friendly with about 14 different naturally gluten free dishes and the staff are well aware of coeliac disease and cross contamination risks. I felt confident and safe eating there.
I knew we were in for a good meal when the wait staff brought around complementary homemade gluten free bread with whipped butter. This is always a good sign to me; it indicates that the restaurant cares about catering for gluten free people and takes pride in the food they’re serving for those people. Too many times, I’ve watched as others are served fresh bread and the gluten free people are served a slice of toast from Coles. So this was definitely a green flag!
As if that wasn’t already the way to my heart, the rest of the meal was. For the entree, we ordered:
The Fraser Isle Spanner crab with macadamia, avocado and fried potatoes (coeliac safe fryer was used)
Abrolhos Island octopus with confit potato and saltbus
Hiramasa kingfish with green tomato and Geraldton wax
And for the main, I ordered the bay lobster with burnt butter and garlic oil.
Each dish was cooked to perfection and full of flavour, I really enjoyed this meal. In terms of pricing, it is fine dining so the price tag matched this. The entrees were between $30-$35 each and the main was about $40.
If you find yourself in The Star or closeby then definitely keep Flying Fish on your radar!
Tequila Daisy, Barangaroo, Sydney
Tequila Daisy is a fantastic Mexican cafe & restaurant located along the harbour in Barangaroo, Sydney. I originally tried Tequila Daisy for a lunch time meal and it was fantastic! It looks to be the same menu for day & night. They’re open til 10pm on weeknights (excluding Mondays) and 11pm on weekends. You can see the details of what we ate in my article about gluten free cafes in Sydney here.
Ms G’s, Kings Cross
Located just a 2min walk from Kings Cross Station, Ms G’s offers a fun and tasty variety of Asian dishes. Eating gluten free here was so simple. We ordered the banquet and they easily catered for me with a few gluten free swaps, making it clear what I could eat and what they’d provide a replacement for. Better yet - it didn’t cost any extra for the gluten free items! Every dish was so fresh and flavourful, I hardly felt like I was missing out. Here’s a summary of the dishes I had as part of the banquet:
Vietnamese steak tartare with prawn crackers
Kingfish sashimi with aged ponzu, kombu & chives
”Strange flavour” burrata
Grilled eggplant with miso caramel & furikake
Grilled king prawns
Wok fried brussels sprouts with mushrooms, cashews & oyster vinegar dressing
Tropical Madness: pine-lime granita, mango sorbet, coconut espuma, lychee, nata de coco
Price wise, I found this to be great value for money! It was $90 per person and that included a cocktail too.
